When it comes to nutrients we need and the foods that provide them, we suffer from a ton of misconceptions. One of the biggest myths about foods with potassium is that the banana is the king of potassium. Sure, bananas have a good amount of potassium, approximately 420 milligrams per one banana. But there are plenty of foods that have much more potassium per serving than the banana.
Don’t like bananas? Don’t worry; eat these top foods with potassium.
Sweet potatoes are one of the best sources of potassium, with 694mg per serving and just 131 calories. Eat them as fries, mash them up or bake them in the oven.
Next time you buy fresh beets don’t throw away the beet greens because they are yet another one of the foods with potassium greater than a banana. They taste slightly bitter like most dark leafy greens, but ½ cup will provide you with 644mg of potassium.
Yogurt isn’t normally what we think about when we think of foods with potassium, but it does beat out the banana by more than 100mg. Just one cup of plain, non-fat yogurt has 579mg of potassium and very little fat. Don’t confuse non-fat with fat-free, because there is a difference!
Next time someone tells you they’re eating a banana for the potassium, tell them your potassium secret.
